To summarize, Mr. Barrowcliff teaches a class of emotionally distrubed 12 to 15 year old boys. He decided to conduct an informal study on the effects of music in the classroom. He tried many different styles of music ranging from light classical to soft rock to country to Frank Sinatra. What he found surprised him!
Every CD he tried was met with complaints from the students. That is until about 15 days into the study, when he tried "Autumn Road" by Vince Madison.
The first difference he noted was that there were no complaints, even after playing the CD continually for 2 days straight. He and the staff also noticed a drop in incidents of poor behavior. The staff also noted that they enjoyed having Vince's music on.
Mr. Barrowcliff then tried some other music similar in sound to Vince's, but strangely, the kids started complaining about the music again! Vince's music was the only music that had the desired theraputic effect.
While Mr. Barrowcliff's study is the only organized study done using Vince's music to date, he is not the only one to notice the music's soothing and theraputic effects.
There is a mother in Texas with an autistic son. At a perfromance in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, she told Vince that her son listens to the Perfect Hearts CD daily. "It's our lifeline" she said. She relies on it to calm and soothe her son when he starts to lose control. "I have a back-up copy so he'll never have to be without it" she said. "He asks for it all the time."
Vince has heard from dozens of teahers who use it in their classrooms with good effect. Vince's music seems to have the following qualities that make it ideal for music therapy:
1. It is calming, relaxing.
2. It does not get in the way of concentration, making it ideal to play in the background in classes while students are studying.
3. It stands up to repeated listenings. Many parents (including Mr. Barrowcliff) report putting their children to bed with Vince's music nightly for years.
